I did the lawnmower demolition derby style event and that was just as fun as the car one (if not more so)! Just hitting people’s lawnmowers and watching them fly off was great fun in itself. I then did a few more races before trying out the lawnmower racing event. The lack of variation in courses could prove troublesome further down the line, but I think the competitiveness and the opposition always makes it feel different. I hope there’s some variation in the courses (though I don’t think there are). Trying to smash into everyone and take them out in the large rectangular course was a load of fun! Here is where changing/tweaking your car to certain events would definitely carry weight. With the decent driving mechanics and the variety of vehicles. I then tried out the demolition derby style event and that was just as fun. It can be a pain if you’re forced to drive around on 20% car health if it just feels hopeless and frustrating. I think this is important to keeping the game fun. It says items are damaged, but you can still drive around perfectly fine. It’s also worth noting that damage on this game doesn’t completely ruin your driving experience.

That level of competitiveness and fun against AI is so rare for me in racing games and I absolutely loved it! Clash with a rival! In one of the early corners one of the AI span me out and became my “rival”! So I got them back on the next corner. The AI on this game are very impressive! They drive almost like you’d imagine a human player to, and I think that’s the finest compliment you can pay to an AI developer. I then went and did another race, with the difficulty turned up a bit and this is where the fun really began. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of haptic feedback initially, compared to playing WRC9 and Dirt 5 this game uses it a lot less, but in hindsight it actually may be a bit more appropriate and prevents “overkill” of the feature. Certainly on par with any decent arcade driving game, and in my opinion felt more fun to drive than Dirt 5. Still, I got to feel the driving model and the car handles really well and responsively. I stupidly didn’t check the CPU difficulty settings so it was all on the easiest settings and therefore a pretty straightforward drive. So I jumped into the career and the first event I did was a “banger race”.

There are also your standard performance mods that you can add to the vehicles in Wreckfest too, which are again very basic. They’re not massive difference makers, but it’s always nice to change the car a bit. You can also do slight customisations to the vehicle, i.e.

There are 68 cars to choose from in the game as you buy and unlock new ones. The game offers pre-made settings for easy, normal or hard “driving difficulty” so it is suitable for players of all levels of experience. Things like tuning sensitivities, ABS support, suspension tuning, are all available on this game which for the people that understand them will be greatly appreciated. I started my journey with this game by checking all of my settings and found the usual for racing games. This game focuses on fun and also manages very good and stable driving mechanics. Problems with other racers I have found is that they over-complicate it by trying to be too technical. It’s not rocket science but the team at Bugbear Entertainment have made a really enjoyable game which looks and sounds great too in my opinion. It’s by no means complicated, you accelerate, brake and turn. I must say I don’t think I’ve had that much fun on a game in a long time. So it’s a simple drive and crash game, but that’s what makes it fun. There’s also the added element of actual racing. there is no “special abilities” or character power ups etc. The concept isn’t far from PS5’s Destruction AllStars which released in February (also as a PS5 freebie) however it is without the extras of that game. Wreckfest is “demolition derby” style game, where you either race or “wreck” your vehicle against opponents.

The PlayStation Plus free game for PS5 users in April, Wreckfest, is a game true to it’s name.

In this series I will be sharing my experience during my first hour of gameplay with a game, so that you can get a feel of what it’s like, and true “first thoughts” as I have only played the game for an hour.
